New Delhi, Aug 21: The 42 legislators of Congress in Gujarat, who played the pivotal role in the re-election of party veteran Ahmed Patel in the Rajya Sabha, met the high command earlier in the day. In the meeting chaired by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, the strategy was discussed for the upcoming assembly elections in the state.
Along with Sonia, her political secretary Ahmed Patel, party vice president Rahul Gandhi and Congress’ Gujarat in-charge Ashok Gehlot, were present at the meet. According to reports, Patel, who is the tallest contemporary Congress leader from Gujarat, briefed party leaders on the early electioneering strategy moving into the polls.
Following the half-hour interaction with the MLAs, Rahul Gandhi updated the media about the meeting through his official twitter handle. “Had a good meeting with Congress MLAs and leaders from Gujarat today,” he said.

Senior Gujarat Congress MLA and state spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil told reporters that Sonia urged the lawmakers to continue to remain on the path of secularism and Gandhism, despite the government abusing state machinery against them.
According to Gohil, Sonia told the legislators to striove towards reclaiming the “Gujarat of Mahatma Gandhi”, rather than eyeing immediate electoral goals. Congress is not a political party which would abort all ethics and moralities to make electoral gains, Gohil quoted Sonia as saying in the meet.
