Algiers, April 28: Laghouat, the wilaya (province) located in central Algeria, contributes 6 legislative seats in the national assembly. The electoral fight in Laghouat remains a trilateral battle among the National Liberation Front (FLN), National Democratic Rally (RND) and the Green Algerian Alliance led by Hamas (Movement for Society and Peace). The elections in Laghouat, along with other 47 provinces in Algeria, would be conducted on May 4.
The total number of inhabitants in Laghouat is 4,55,602. The province is part of the Saharan Atlas range of Mountains, located at an altitude of 750-2000m above sea level. The province is divided into 10 districts and 24 communes (municipalities).

The upcoming elections in Algeria is considered to be the most crucial political event in the 47-year-old history of Algerian republic. The forthcoming polls are the first after the constitutional amendments passed by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. All major political parties in the fray have appealed the electorate to cast their votes on May 4 in order to strengthen the nascent democratic setup in Algeria. A total of 71 registered political outfits are contesting in the elections. Except for the far-right Islamic Salvation Party, none of the other outfits have been barred from entering the poll fray.
