Algier, May 4: Legislative elections in Algeria were held on May 4, 2017, across the 48 wilayas. The polling remained unimpressive, with the total voter turnout recorded as 33.5 per cent till 5 PM. The counting of votes was scheduled to begin shortly after polling concluded. Stay tuned here for the live updates of election results, trends and updates from Mila, Tipaza, Ain Defla and Naama.
The four provinces constitute a total of 32 seats in the national assembly. The region is primarily dominated by the National Liberation Front (FLN). The National Democratic Rally offers the closest competition to the FLN. The Green Algeria Alliance led by Hamas, which plays the role of prime Opposition in the national assembly, failed to emerge as a strong alternative in the four wilayas in the 2012 elections.
The Front of Socialist Forces (FFS) and the Workers’ Party have also campaigned aggressively in Mila and Ain Defla in a bid to gain electoral share in the two wilayas.
The final results are scheduled to be declared on May 5 by the High Independent Commission for Election Oversight (HICEO). The polling conducted earlier in the day was ‘peaceful’, with no instance of violence or ruckus observed in any part of the nation. The international observers sent by Arab League, African Union and United Nations hailed the preparations made by the polling bodies for smooth and fair conduct of the elections.
