Algiers, April 30: The legislative elections in Algeria are scheduled on May 4. The independent election commission, assigned by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, has earmarked 53,000 polling centres across the 48 wilayas (provinces) across the nation. From Bechar province, a total of 5 seats would be contested. In the previous assembly elections, the ruling FLN had bagged one seat, whereas, the Green Algeria Alliance, Movement El Infitah and National Democratic Rally (RND) had bagged 1 seat each.
Bechar province is divided into 12 districts and 21 communes (municipalities). The province is located in the easternmost region of Algeria. The population is significantly low as compared to the neighbouring provinces, with a total of 2,70,061 inhabitants.

The electoral battle in Bechar is evenly poised. While FLN is considered to be the most dominant political force in the region, the RND has also geared up to increase its tally in the province.The opposition – Green Algeria Alliance (led by Hamas), has also campaigned aggressively to alter the electoral balance in the province.

A total of 462 legislative seats would be contested in the upcoming elections. The seats would be contested in a multi-electoral manner, with the constituencies being allocated to political parties on basis of their vote share. In the 2012 elections, FLN had emerged as the single largest party winning 208 seats. It formed a post-poll alliance with RND which had won 68 seats.
